PORTLAND, Maine – The Maine Mariners officially added the first player to their 2021-22 roster, announcing the signing of defenseman Brycen Martin. The 25-year-old blue liner was on the Mariners roster in 2018-19, where he enjoyed a career-best season.

Originally from Calgary, Alberta, Martin was selected in the third round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. He saw time with their AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans between 2015-17, and also played for Buffalo’s ECHL affiliates, the Elmira Jackals (2016-17) and Cincinnati Cyclones (2017-18).

Martin was assigned to the Mariners for the 2018-19 season and spent the entire campaign in Maine. He led all Mariners defensemen in scoring as he posted 28 points (7g-21a) in 54 games. He was also third on the team in penalty minutes, with 79.

Martin began the 2019-20 season with the Fort Wayne Komets and appeared in 29 games, before being traded to the Norfolk Admirals in January of 2020. He totaled 14 points (4g-10a) 47 games between the two teams.

Most recently, Martin played in Poland during the 2020-21 season, where he was a member of GKS Tychy, of Polska Hokej Liga. He played in 10 regular-season games, scoring five points (1g-4a) before adding three points (1g-2a) in 10 playoff contests

Prior to turning pro, the 25-year-old played most of his junior hockey in the Western Hockey League, with the Swift Current Broncos, Saskatoon Blades and Everett Silvertips.
