BOISE, Idaho – The Idaho Steelheads have signed defenseman Casey Johnson to a contract for the 2021-22. seasonJohnson, 25, made his professional debut with the Macon Mayhem of the Southern Professional Hockey League in 2020-21, tallying 13 points (3g-10a) with a +20 rating through 33 games in his first season. He finished third among defensemen in points and was named to both the SPHL All-Rookie Team and SPHL Second All-Star Team. The Grand Forks, North Dakota native made his ECHL debut with the South Carolina Stingrays on Feb. 27, 2021 and played six games.Prior to his professional career, Johnson played four seasons at the University of North Dakota, tallying 13 points (4g-9a) in 106 games with just 25 penalty minutes. He was a member of the 2019-20 squad that won the National Collegiate Hockey Conference regular-season championship and was ranked third in the country prior to the shutdown of the NCAA Tournament due to the pandemic. He also was in the 2016 United States Hockey League Clark Cup Finals with the Dubuque Fighting Saints and was named to the North American Hockey League All-Rookie Second Team in 2014-15 with the Minot Minotauros.
