Baseball has its Ex-Cubs Factor, the theory that the team with the most former Chicago Cubs is more prone to failure.
The Calder Cup final has an Ex-Ads Factor, but it is a positive for the Hershey Bears and Hamilton Bulldogs.
Hershey’s Quintin Laing and Hamilton’s Ajay Baines (pictured), Norfolk Admirals teammates for five years, are key components to their conference championship clubs. Laing played in the ECHL with Jackson each of his first two professional seasons and Baines played for Greenville as a rookie.
“I think it’s a lot different than playing him in the regular season, for sure,” Laing said. “This is the finals. You put the friendships aside. I probably won’t even talk to him until after this series. I just want to stay focused on what we’re after.”
Laing and Baines play on highly effective shutdown lines.
Laing, Dave Steckel and Chris Bourque have helped smother opposing scorers this postseason.
