BOISE, Idaho – Idaho Steelheads coach Derek Laxdal figured he had recruited a quality hockey player in Michael Olson this past offseason.
After all, Olson had just finished a solid four-year career at St. Cloud State. Before college, Olson was named Canada’s Junior A Player of the Year.
But it was during the preseason that Laxdal’s respect for Olson was cemented.
“When a kid plays for four days with a broken leg in training camp and doesn’t say a word, those are the kind of guys you want on your team,” Laxdal said.
It turns out that’s exactly what Olson did. Laxdal said he thought Olson had slowed down during practices and mentioned it to captain Marty Flichel.
Flichel said, “Coach, he took a pretty good shot four days ago.”
