Jackals agree to terms with defenseman Zach Tolkinen

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira Jackals, ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres and AHL’s Rochester Americans, announced that rookie defenseman Zach Tolkinen has signed a Standard Player Contract for the 2014-15 season.

Tolkinen, 24, set a career high with 22 points (3g-19a) last season as a senior at Quinnipiac University. The Lino Lakes, Minn. native recorded 47 points (9g-38a) and 151 penalty minutes in 135 career NCAA games. As a junior, he was part of the Bobcats’ squad that advanced to the Frozen Four for the first time in school history. Quinnipiac fell to Yale in the 2013 National Championship Game. Following his senior campaign, Tolkinen signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Abbotsford Heat.

Prior to attending Quinnipiac, Tolkinen played for the Owatonna Express and the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the North American Hockey League, notching 42 points (12g-30a) and 171 penalty minutes in 93 NAHL games.
