KALAMAZOO, Mich. – As a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, Kalamazoo Wings forward Brian McGuirk was surprised to learn that he was playing hockey in the hometown of New York Yankees star slugger, Derek Jeter.

“I didn’t know that, but I heard it when I got here, and that’s a good thing,” McGuirk said of Jeter. “I hate a lot of the Yankees, but Jeter is one of my favorite athletes.”

Citing the way the Jeter handles himself and how professional he is, McGuirk said, “It doesn’t matter if he is a Yankee or not, I have a lot of respect for him.”

But that is where his fondness for the Yankees ends.

“If this was A-Rod’s hometown, I might have had a problem with it,” McGuirk said with his trademark Boston accent.

As a Sox fan, it comes as no surprise that McGuirk does not hold the Yankees in high regard. To make matters worse, his girlfriend and her family are diehard Yankee fans, which is what motivated McGuirk to watch the Bronx Bombers take on the Philadelphia Phillies in this year’s World Series.

“I had to watch the World Series so when the Phillies won a game, I could throw a couple of jabs at them,” McGuirk said with a laugh.
