The Mallards are the ECHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League and the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League.
Gibson, 25, was named to the 2014-15 Division III All-American First Team and was voted Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year after leading defensemen nationwide in points (32) as a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Gross Pointe, Mich. native scored eight goals and collected 24 assists in 31 games last season. After completing his final collegiate campaign, Gibson played three games for the Tulsa Oilers at the end of the regular season.
Gibson totaled 83 points (18g-65a) in 117 games over four highly decorated seasons at UWSP. Gibson was named to the All-WIAC first team each of the last two years after earning All-Northern Collegiate Hockey Association honorable mention as a sophomore. As a junior he helped propel the Pointers to the 2014 NCAA title game.
He is the son of former Major League Baseball player and manager Kirk Gibson, who played for the Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates between 1979 and 1995 before managing the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2010-14. The elder Gibson twice won the World Series in his playing days and was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1988.
