TORONTO, Ontario – The Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League announced that they have exercised the club options on the contracts of former Cincinnati Cyclones defenseman Joe Ryan and former Gwinnett Gladiators defenseman Josh Engel (pictured).
The Reading Royals are the ECHL affiliate of the Marlies of the AHL and the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League.
Selected in the second round (48th overall) by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, the 21-year-old Ryan had seven points (1g-6a) and 31 penalty minutes in 20 games for Cincinnati as a rookie in 2008-09. He also played for the Marlies in 2008-09 and 12 points (3g-9a) and 32 penalty minutes in 36 regular season games while also appearing in four playoff games.
The 24-year-old Engel had 14 points (2g-12a) and 16 penalty minutes in 36 games for Gwinnett as a rookie in 2008-09. He also played in the AHL where he had five points (1g-4a) and 20 penalty minutes in 28 regular season games and one assist in three playoff games for Toronto and two penalty minutes in four regular season games with Providence.
