Martinson Named Elmira Coach

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira Jackals announced that they have hired Steve Martinson as head coach and director of hockey operations.

The Jackals, who play at First Arena, a 4,000-seat multi-purpose facility in Downtown Elmira, have averaged 3,308 per game over the last seven seasons with 31 sellouts, including a team record standing-room-only crowd of 4,126 on Oct. 13, 2006.

Martinson, returns to the ECHL after spending the last three seasons as head coach of Rockford who he led to the United Hockey League championship in 2007, has coached 12 seasons and has a 576-203-68 regular season record. He has won eight championships, six as a coach and two as a player.

In his only season in the ECHL, Martinson led San Diego to the Brabham Cup championship in 2003-04 with a 49-13-10 record. The 49 wins set the ECHL record for wins by a first-year team and the Gulls became only the second expansion team in history to win the regular-season points title. Toledo won the points title in its first season with a then record for a first-year team 46 wins in 1991-92. Erie won the points title in the first season of the ECHL in 1988-89.
