Mastovich Receives ECHL
Outstanding Media Award

PRINCETON, N.J. – The ECHL announced on Thursday that Mike Mastovich of The Tribune-Democrat in Johnstown, Pa. is the 2004-05 recipient of the ECHL Outstanding Media Award.

The award is determined in a vote of league media members, media relations directors and broadcasters.

Mastovich has covered the Johnstown Chiefs and the ECHL for 14 seasons as the beat writer for The Tribune-Democrat while also serving as a correspondent for several other publications, including The Hockey News and Hockey Business News. He wrote an article for the 2002-03 ECHL Official Guide and Record Book commemorating the 15th Anniversary of the ECHL and chronicled the first 10 seasons for the league in 1997-98.

The Tribune-Democrat staff and the Johnstown Chiefs players, coaches, front office, owners and diehard fans have made covering the ECHL an unforgettable experience over the past 14 seasons,” Mastovich said. “When you have beat writers in this league like Dave Eminian in Peoria, Len Bardsley and Brian Compton in Trenton, Andy Kent and Ed Reed in Florida and Matt Nevala in Alaska who have set such high standards, it is an honor to be recognized by one’s peers.”

Mastovich received his master’s degree in sports communications from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Mastovich began his career at the Tribune-Democrat in November 1986 after 14 months at the Indiana (Pennsylvania) Gazette. He and his wife, Terry, live in Johnstown with their children – Shelby (13), Michael (8) and Ryan (4).
