GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Greenville Road Warriors have announced that defenseman Jyri Niemi has been reassigned to the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League. In a separate transaction the club has signed defenseman Ricky Helmbrecht.
The Road Warriors are the ECHL affiliate of the Whale and the National Hockey League’s New York Rangers.
Niemi, 22, has appeared in 14 games with the Road Warriors since his reassignment on Dec. 29. During that span, the Hameenkyro, Finland native scored one goal and five assists with a +8 rating. Niemi was selected by the New York Islanders in the third round (72nd overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
Helmbrecht, 27, played the majority of the year in Southern Professional Hockey League with the Knoxville Ice Bears where he has played 26 games, recording two goals and six assists. He also had a three game stint with the Cincinnati Cyclones.
