Oilers Hire Ward As Development Coach

EDMONTON, Alberta – The Edmonton Oilers announced that they have named Geoff Ward as development coach.

Ward, who coached Arkansas in its inaugural season, joined the Oilers organization in 2001 as an assistant coach in the American Hockey League with Hamilton which advanced to the 2002 Calder Cup semifinals. He began 2002-03 as an assistant coach and finished the season as head coach when Claude Julien was promoted to head coach of the Montreal Canadiens.

Ward and Julien shared the AHL Coach of the Year as Hamilton finished the season 16-13-5 and advanced to the Calder Cup Finals. For four straight years from 2001-04 the winner of the Coach of the Year award in the American Hockey League was a former ECHL coach – Claude Noel (2004), Geoff Ward (2003), Bruce Cassidy (2002) and Don Granato (2001).

In 2003-04 with Toronto of the AHL, Ward was 35-34-11 and reached the postseason and in 2004-05 he was 32-33-15 with Edmonton of the AHL.
