Overtime Plays Important Role
in First Round

Three of the decisive games in the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs were determined by a 4-3 score in overtime, including Charlotte’s 4-3 win at Columbia in Game 5 on Wednesday. Florida beat South Carolina 4-3 in overtime in Game 4 of theiY5{nce Semifinal series and Trenton beat Atlantic City 4-3 in overtime of Game 3 in their North Division Semifinal series.

There were nine overtime game in the first round, one shy of the league record 10 overtime games (eight overtime and two double overtime) in the opening round in 2004. Six of the eight series in the opening round had an overtime game. The nine overtime games in the first round ties the opening round of 2001 (six overtime and three double overtime). The 2004 postseason ended with 16 overtime games (12 overtime and four double overtime) equaling 2001 (11 overtime and five double overtime). The most overtime games in a postseason is 17 (12 overtime, four double overtime and one triple overtime) in 1998.

The first three games in Greenville’s upset of Pensacola went to overtime with the Grrrowl winning the first two while the last two games in Trenton’s sweep of Atlantic City were decided past regulation.

Brent Robinson of Trenton recorded the fastest overtime goal in the postseason since 1999 when he scored 20 seconds into overtime to give Trenton a 2-1 win against Atlantic City on April 15. Robinson surpassed the mark of Shane Kenny of Arkansas, who scored 21 seconds into overtime on April 3, 2001 against Baton Rouge, and Lance Galbraith of Idaho, who scored 21 seconds into overtime on April 13, 2004 against Las Vegas.
