NEW YORK – The New York Rangers announced that they have agreed to terms with former Charlotte Checkers forward Craig Weller. The Checkers are the ECHL affiliate of the Rangers and for Hartford of the American Hockey League.
In his rookie season in 2002-03, the 6-foot-4 and 220-pound Weller had 14 points (3g-11a) and 84 penalty minutes in 48 games with Charlotte while also playing 11 regular season games and two playoff games with Hartford in the AHL.
In 2004-05 with Hartford, the 24-year-old had 19 points (10g-9a) and tied for fourth on the team with 182 penalty minutes in 76 regular season games and had one assist and six penalty minutes in six playoff games.
Selected in the fifth round (167th overall) by St. Louis in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Weller has 47 points (18g-29a) and 360 penalty minutes in 203 career regular season games and five points (2g-3a) and 36 penalty minutes in 24 playoff games.
