Red Wings Re-Sign Former Storm Center Ellis

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings announced that they have signed former Toledo center Matt Ellis to a two-year contract. The Toledo Storm is the ECHL affiliate of the Red Wings and Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League. The head coach of the Griffins is former Dayton coach Greg Ireland.

In his first professional season in 2002-03, the 6-1 and 205-pound Ellis led Toledo and tied for fourth among league rookies with 27 goals while ranking second on the team and ninth among rookies with 59 points in 71 regular season games. He led the team with eight power-play goals and was second on the team in plus-minus rating (+16) while helping the Storm capture the Brabham Cup. He was named CCM ECHL Rookie of the Month after scoring 16 points (8g-8a) and helping Toledo go 9-2-2 in March 2003.

In 2004-05 with Grand Rapids, the 23-year-old ranked third on the team with 18 goals and was fourth in assists with 23 while tying for fourth in scoring with 41 points in 79 games. He tied the team record and tied for sixth in the AHL with four shorthand goals and was second on the team and first among forwards in plus-minus rating (+10). Originally signed as a free agent by Detroit on May 10, 2002, Ellis has 56 points (23g-33a) in 143 career games with Grand Rapids.
