Reading, PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has acquired the ECHL rights to forward Matt Caruana from the Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL in exchange for future considerations.
Caruana, who hails from Orono, Ontario, scored 13 goals and picked up 12 assists in 32 games for the Gladiators last season. Caruana, who will be entering his third full season of pro, also registered nine points (3g-6a) in 36 games last season with the Portland Pirates of the AHL. Caruana, who was signed to an NHL contract by the Anaheim Ducks after completing his collegiate eligibility at Niagara University, has played 82 games in the AHL, including 41 in the 2008-09 season with the Iowa Chops.
While at Niagara University, Caruana scored 51 goals and assisted on 78 others in 146 total college games. In his senior season, Caruana captained the Purple Eagles squad that won the College Hockey America championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
