READING, Pa. – During the summer, Reading Royals general manager Gordon Kaye phoned one of the team’s sponsors, DeCarlo Custom Cabinetry in West Reading.
“I said, ‘I have a crazy idea: Will you build us a locker room?’ ” Kaye said.
Kaye and equipment manager Pat Noecker had been planning a renovation of the Sovereign Center locker room for more than two years. With the ECHL All-Star Game coming to Reading in January, Kaye decided it was time to move ahead with the project.
Despite interruptions caused by events such as Disney On Ice, DeCarlo has built and installed most of the new pieces to the room within a two-month span. Kaye said there are still two small sections left to be installed.
“To us it’s more than a locker room, it’s a home,” said Kaye, who also hired DeCarlo to build the team’s broadcast booth two years ago.
“I think the team at DeCarlo did an amazing job of making our dreams come true,” he said. “It’s the locker room we wanted since the day Pat and I first started talking about it. It wouldn’t have happened without DeCarlo. It’s a testament to the power of using local companies.”
