WINNIPEG, Manitoba Ð Manitoba Moose netminder and Penguin-killer Wade Flaherty might be the only goalie to whom Dany Sabourin takes a backseat this season.
Sabourin will back up Flaherty, a 38-year-old hockey standby who is having himself a very nice season in the AHLÕs Western Conference with the Moose. Flaherty earned the start in net for the Canadian AHL All-Stars via AHL-wide fan balloting for tonightÕs AHL All-Star Classic.
He will go up against the PlanetUSA All-Stars, a squad that will be coached by Penguins head coach Joe Mullen, assistant coach Al Sims and which will also feature Wilkes-Barre/ScrantonÕs Noah Welch on its blue line.
ÒIÕm really honored to be part of that, and IÕm here to have a good time,Ó Sabourin said in the relaxed Canadian dressing room before Tuesday nightÕs AHL All-Star Skills Competition.
While this weekÕs AHL festivities are filled with young, top-notch prospects, the event also provides a showcase for types like Sabourin, players in their mid-20s who have been discarded by other NHL organizations and are looking for a fresh look.
ÒItÕs a great opportunity.Ó
