Victoria, BC – The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that forward Derek Couture has been loaned to the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL). Couture, 26, previously played for the Connecticut franchise, then known as the Hartford Wolf Pack, during last year’s 2009-10 campaign. In 67 appearances with Hartford he scored 11 goals and assisted on nine others for 20 points, while serving 104 penalty minutes.
The Calgary, AB native has dressed in 25 games in Victoria this season, netting 19 points (8g-11a) to go along with 76 minutes in penalties.
Shantz has appeared in 44 games with the Salmon Kings this season, posting a 21-19-3 record along with a 0.909 save percentage, a 2.79 goals against average and two shutouts. Shantz currently leads all ECHL goaltenders this season with 2,577 minutes played while he ranks second with 1,199 saves. Additionally, Shantz has twice earned the Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week award this season with the Salmon Kings.
