North Charleston, SC – The Kelly Cup Champion South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Cail MacLean announced today that the team has agreed to terms with forward Rob Ricci. In keeping with club policy, details of the agreement were not disclosed.
The Stingrays are the ECHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League and the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. The head coach of the Capitals is Bruce Boudreau. Boudreau, who coached Mississippi for three seasons winning the Kelly Cup championship in 1999, was named NHL Coach of the Year in 2007-08 becoming the first former ECHL coach to receive the award. Former ECHL player and coach Bob Woods, who led Hershey to the AHL championship in 2009, is an assistant coach for Washington while Arturs Irbe, who played in the ECHL in 2003-04, is the goaltending coach for the Capitals. The head coach of Hershey is former ECHL assistant coach Mark French and the assistant coach of the Bears is former ECHL player and coach Troy Mann.
Ricci, 25, returns to the Stingrays after finishing 11th among ECHL rookies with 25 goals and 25 assists for 50 points. The Brampton, ON native was one of only two Stingrays skaters to compete in all 72 regular season games during the 2009-10 campaign. During the 2008-2009 ECHL Playoffs, Ricci dressed in seven games and netted one goal as the Stingrays captured their ECHL-record third Kelly Cup title.
