Stingrays sign defenseman MacKenzie

North Charleston, S.C. – The South Carolina Stingrays have signed defenseman Drew MacKenzie, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Spencer Carbery announced.

The Stingrays are the ECHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Hershey Bears and Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League.

MacKenzie, 25, skated in 46 games with the Alaska Aces last season earning 20 points (3g-17a) along with posting a plus-minus rating of +18. He added eight points (5g-3a) in 18 playoff matchups to help the Aces capture the 2014 Kelly Cup championship. The New Canaan, Conn. native began the season with the American Hockey League’s Abbotsford Heat, where he tallied five points (1g-4a) in 17 games.

Entering his third professional season, MacKenzie carries 71 career ECHL contests and 34 points (8g-26a) with Alaska and Utah. He has also tallied 14 points (2g-12a) in 44 AHL games, all with Abbotsford. Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound defenseman attended the University of Vermont for four seasons.
