NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The South Carolina Stingrays announced that they have signed rookie goaltender Josh Johnson and rookie forward Matt Scherer.
The Stingrays are the ECHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League and the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.
The 23-year-old Johnson played the last four years at the University of Minnesota Duluth where he was 22-20-4 with three shutouts and a goals-against average of 2.71 in 51 games from 2003-07.
The 25-year-old Scherer played four seasons at the University of Connecticut where he had 105 points (62g-43a) and 183 penalty minutes in 138 games from 2003-07. The 6-foot and 195-pound forward tied for the Atlantic Hockey Association lead with a career-high 24 goals while finishing with a team-leading and career-best 36 points in 35 games in 2006-07.
