Stockton’s Sexsmith named Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week

PRINCETON, N.J.- Tyson Sexsmith of the Stockton Thunder is the Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for March 14-20. He also won the award for the week ending Oct. 24.

 

The 22 year old was 3-0-0 with one shutout, a 0.97 goals-against average and a .964 save percentage in three appearances last week for the Thunder, who moved into first place in the Pacific Division with an overall record of 34-22-10 for 78 points.

 

Sexsmith made 29 saves in regulation and overtime, and stopped all seven attempts in the shootout, helping lead the Thunder to a 3-2 win over Idaho on Friday. He followed that up with 23 saves in a 5-1 victory against the Steelheads on Saturday and ended the week with 29 saves in a 4-0 win against Idaho on Sunday.

 

The Calgary, Alberta native has appeared in 12 games for Stockton this season posting a 7-2-2 record with one shutout, a 2.49 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage. He has also seen action in six games with Worcester of the AHL going 2-3-1 with a 2.94 goals-against average and a save percentage of .902.

 

A third-round selection (91st overall) of the San Jose Sharks in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Sexsmith appeared in two games with Kalamazoo in 2009-10 posting a 2-0-0 record, a 2.50 goals-against average and a save percentage of .932 while also appearing in 13 games with Worcester.

 

Prior to turning pro, he played for Medicine Hat and Vancouver of the Western Hockey League, and is that league’s all-time leader with 26 shutouts, and helped to lead Vancouver to the 2007 Memorial Cup title.
