VICTORIA, British Columbia – The Victoria Salmon Kings announced that they have signed San Jose Sharks center Mark Smith.
Selected in the ninth round (219th overall) by San Jose in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, the 5-10 and 205-pound Smith had four points (1g-3a) in 36 regular season games and one goal in 10 playoff games for the Sharks in 2003-04. Smith has led the team in face-off percentage in each of his four seasons in San Jose while scoring 29 points (10g-19a) in 202 regular season games.
The 27-year-old Smith played four seasons with Lethbridge in the Western Hockey League where his coach was current Victoria head coach and general manager Bryan Maxwell. Smith had 208 points (75g-133a) and 415 penalty minutes in 252 regular season games, including career highs with 42 goals, 67 assists, 109 points and 206 penalty minutes in 70 games his final season in 1997-98.
