Even though Patrick Wellar becomes the Alaska Aces’ opponent this week, the big defenseman fondly recalls his two seasons with the club.
After all, he won the ECHL’s 2006 Kelly Cup with the Aces, and in a five-season journey through the pro ranks that has taken him to eight outposts in the ECHL and American Hockey League, he has played more games for the Aces than any other club.
Wellar, 25, played much of the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons with the Aces, and skated in all 37 of the club’s playoff games in that span. He played 143 regular-season and postseason matches for the Aces.
“Winning the Cup was the best thing to ever happen in my hockey career,” Wellar said by phone earlier this week. “I really loved my time up there. Leaving Alaska after my third year (as a pro) was the toughest decision I’ve ever made.
“I loved the town and I loved my teammates, and I just had the best time there.”
